Disturbed vs. undisturbed cores
In a mud vibracore the upper few inches of silt are usually watery and without any apparent structure.  This material may be resuspended naturally by wave action, currents and organisms.  This silt, stirred up in the vibrocore tube, settles out after vibration stops.

Firmer silt below often exhibits layering and even gas bubble cavities in the core interior.  Coring vibrations cause disturbance and smearing only within a thin layer next to the tube wall.
